How the Age Calculator works
A half birthday is the date six months after a birthday. For most dates that is just the same day number six months on: a June 15 birthday has its half birthday on December 15, a March 3 birthday on September 3.
The end of the month is where it gets interesting. February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year, so six months after August 29, 30 or 31 there is no matching day. The date clamps the way a bank or a lease handles a one-month step from January 31: to the last day of the month. A child born August 31, 2018 has half birthdays on February 28 in common years and February 29 in leap years. The next two are Sunday, February 28, 2027 and Tuesday, February 29, 2028. The same applies to birthdays on March 31, May 31, October 31 and December 31, whose half birthdays fall on a 30th.
Some people define the half birthday as the exact midpoint in days instead. A year does not split evenly, so the two readings can differ by a day or two. From August 31, 2026 to the February 28 half birthday is 181 days, and from there to August 31, 2027 is 184: the midpoint of that 365-day year falls about a day and a half later. For a June 15 birthday the calendar date and the midpoint are within a day.
