Exponent Calculator
A power is repeated multiplication until the exponent stops being a whole number. Then it is a root. The exponent calculator explains which case you are in.
2^10
- Written out An integer power is repeated multiplication, and that is the only case where it is.
- 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
- Reciprocal power Flipping the sign of the exponent gives the reciprocal. The two results multiply to exactly 1.
- 2 ^ -10 = 0.0009765625
- Checked by logarithm The logarithm is the inverse operation, so taking it of the result returns the exponent. Any tiny difference is floating-point rounding.
- log base 2 of 1,024 = 10
How the Exponent Calculator works
An exponent counts how many times a number multiplies itself: 2^5 is 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, which is 32. That definition is complete and correct for positive whole exponents, and useless for every other kind, which includes most of the interesting ones. What happens next is one of the better pieces of mathematical reasoning a person meets early, because the other cases are forced rather than defined by decree.
Start with the rule that multiplying powers adds exponents: b^m times b^n is b^(m+n). Everything else follows from insisting that rule keeps working.
Zero exponent. b^1 divided by b^1 is 1, and by the rule it is also b^(1-1), which is b^0. So b^0 must be 1, because anything else breaks the rule. The single contested case is 0^0, which combinatorics and most programming languages take as 1 and analysis often leaves undefined, because the two-variable limit depends on the path.
Negative exponents. b^0 divided by b^n is b^(-n), and b^0 is 1, so b^(-n) is 1 over b^n. A negative exponent gives a reciprocal, not a negative number. 2^-3 is 0.125. This is the single most common misreading of the notation.
Fractional exponents. (b^(1/2))^2 is b^(1/2 x 2), which is b. So b^(1/2) is the number that squares to b: the square root. Generally b^(m/n) is the nth root of b raised to the m. Roots and powers are one operation, with the exponent on either side of 1.
Two practical limits. A negative base with a fractional exponent has no real value, because it asks for an even root of a negative number; the answer exists in the complex numbers and not here. And exponentials outrun everything: 2^1000 has 302 digits, and a double-precision number tops out around 1.8 x 10^308, so results beyond that are reported as unrepresentable rather than as infinity.
That growth rate is the thing actually worth taking away. A quantity multiplying by a fixed factor each step passes any quantity growing by a fixed amount, no matter how large the fixed amount or how small the factor, given enough steps. It is why compound interest works, why an unchecked epidemic is not a straight line, and why algorithmic complexity that is exponential in the input is treated as a failure rather than a cost.
Exponent Calculator FAQ
What is a negative exponent?
A reciprocal, not a negative number. b^-n is 1 divided by b^n, so 2^-3 is 1/8 = 0.125. It follows from the rule that dividing powers subtracts exponents: b^0 / b^n is b^-n, and b^0 is 1.
Why is anything to the power zero equal to 1?
Because b^1 divided by b^1 is obviously 1, and by the exponent rules it is also b^(1-1) = b^0. For the rules to stay consistent, b^0 has to be 1. It is forced rather than chosen.
What is 0 to the power 0?
Genuinely contested. Combinatorics, set theory and most programming languages define it as 1, because it makes the binomial theorem and countless formulas work without a special case. Analysis often leaves it undefined, because the limit of x^y as both approach zero depends on how they approach. This calculator gives 1.
What does a fractional exponent mean?
A root. x^(1/2) is the square root, x^(1/3) the cube root, and x^(m/n) is the nth root raised to the power m. It is forced by the rule that raising a power to a power multiplies the exponents: (x^(1/2))^2 must be x.
Why can I not raise a negative number to a fractional power?
Because it asks for an even root of a negative number, which has no real value; nothing real squares to -4. Odd roots of negatives do exist, so the cube root of -8 is -2, but the general fractional case is not defined over the reals and this calculator reports it rather than guessing.
What is the difference between 2^10 and 10^2?
1024 and 100. Exponentiation is not commutative, and the gap widens fast: 2^10 is 1024 while 10^2 is 100, and 2^100 is about 1.27 x 10^30 while 100^2 is 10,000. Which number is the base and which the exponent matters more than almost any other choice in arithmetic.
