Volume of a cube calculator
Give the volume of a cube calculator a 5 cm side and it returns 125 cm³ (5 × 5 × 5), which is 0.125 liters, with a surface area of 150 cm².
Volume
- Volume Volume units are the measurement unit cubed: in centimeters the answer is in cubic centimeters.
- 125 cm³
- Formula A cube is a box with every edge equal, so length times width times height becomes the side cubed. That is where the word 'cubed' comes from.
- V = s³ = 5³ = 125
- Measurements used
- s = 5 cm
- Total surface area A = 6s² = 6 × 5².
- 150 cm²
- Lateral area (four sides) The four walls without top or bottom: 4s². What you would paint on a room-shaped cube.
- 100 cm²
- In liters 1 liter is 1,000 cubic centimeters, the volume of a 10 cm cube.
- 0.125 L
- In US gallons A US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, 3.785411784 liters. An imperial gallon is about 20% larger.
- 0.03302151 gal
- In other cubic units Cubic conversions cube the length factor: a yard is 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet.
- 0.000125 m³ = 0.004414333 ft³ = 0.0001634938 yd³
| Every length times | Volume | Surface area |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 15.625 cm³ (×0.125) | 37.5 cm² (×0.25) |
| 1 | 125 cm³ (×1) | 150 cm² (×1) |
| 2 | 1,000 cm³ (×8) | 600 cm² (×4) |
| 3 | 3,375 cm³ (×27) | 1,350 cm² (×9) |
| 10 | 125,000 cm³ (×1,000) | 15,000 cm² (×100) |
- Volume scales with the cube of length and surface area with the square. Double every measurement and the volume goes up 8 times while the surface only goes up 4. That is why large animals keep heat better and why small ice cubes melt faster.
How the Volume Calculator works
The volume of a cube is V = s³, the side length multiplied by itself three times. A cube is a box whose length, width and height are all equal, so l × w × h becomes s × s × s. For a side of 5 cm that is 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 cm³. This is where "cubed" comes from: raising a number to the third power is finding the volume of a cube with that side.
Picture it as counting. A 5 cm cube can be filled with 1 cm cubes in layers: 5 rows of 5 in each layer, 25 per layer, and 5 layers, so 125 small cubes. Volume is that count, and the unit is the small cube, a cubic centimeter here. A cubic centimeter is a milliliter, so the cube holds 125 mL, or 0.125 liters.
The common mistake is squaring instead of cubing. 5² = 25 is the area of one face in square centimeters, not the volume. The surface area of the whole cube is six of those faces, 6s² = 150 cm², which is what you would need to wrap or paint it. Volume is cubic units, area is square units, and a cube happens to have a volume and surface area that are equal only at a side of exactly 6.
Unit conversions cube the conversion factor, and that is the second mistake. A meter is 100 centimeters, so a cubic meter is 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cm³, not 100. A yard is 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, which is how concrete and mulch are sold. A cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches, about 7.48 US gallons. The 10 cm cube is the anchor worth remembering: it holds exactly one liter.
Cubing also means the volume grows fast. Double the side to 10 cm and the volume goes from 125 to 1,000 cm³, eight times as much, while the surface goes up only four times. Going the other way needs a cube root: a cube holding 125 cm³ has a side of ∛125 = 5. The ancient problem of doubling the cube asks for the side of a cube with twice the volume; for this one that is ∛250, about 6.300 cm. The Greeks tried to construct that length with a compass and straightedge, and in 1837 it was proved impossible.
Two diagonals are often asked for alongside the volume. Across one face it is s√2, about 7.071 cm here. Through the middle of the cube from one corner to the opposite corner it is s√3, about 8.660 cm, the longest straight object that fits inside. If the sides are not all equal, the solid is a rectangular box, V = l × w × h, which is the box shape on this calculator.
Volume Calculator FAQ
What is the formula for the volume of a cube?
V = s³, the side cubed. A cube with 5 cm sides has a volume of 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 cubic centimeters.
How do I find the side of a cube from its volume?
Take the cube root. A cube holding 125 cm³ has a side of ∛125 = 5 cm, and one holding 1,000 cm³ (one liter) has a side of 10 cm.
What is the surface area of a cube?
6s², six square faces. For a 5 cm cube that is 6 × 25 = 150 square centimeters.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
27, because a yard is 3 feet and the conversion is cubed: 3 × 3 × 3. Dividing cubic feet by 3 instead of 27 is a common ordering mistake.
