Z Score Calculator

Enter a value, the mean and the standard deviation, and this z score calculator gives the z score, its percentile and the area on each side, then points to its row and column in the z-table.

z score from a value: the value to score.

The population mean, or the sample mean for a sample.

The population SD, or the sample SD for a sample. In percentile mode, used to turn the z back into a value.

Area mode: the z to find the area for, and the first end of a between region.

Area mode only.

Area mode, between two z values only. Either order works.

Percentile mode: the share of the curve below the z you want, from 0 to 100.

z score1.50

z score (85 - 70) / 10 = 15 / 10. The distance from the mean, counted in standard deviations.
1.50
Percentile 85 is higher than 93.32% of a normal distribution with this mean and SD: the 93rd percentile.
93.32%
Area to the left, P(Z < 1.50) What a z-table lists: the share of the curve below z.
0.9332
Area to the right, P(Z > 1.50) 1 minus the area to the left, computed from the tail directly so it keeps its digits far out. The upper-tail p-value of z.
0.0668
Between -1.50 and 1.50 The middle of the curve, as wide on each side as z is from 0.
0.8664
Beyond -1.50 or 1.50 Both tails together: twice the smaller tail, and the two-tailed p-value of z.
0.1336
In the z-table Round z to 1.50. The row is the first decimal, the column the second, and the entry is the area to the left of z.
row 1.5, column 0.00: 0.9332
Z-table, positive z: the area to the left of z. Row is z to one decimal, column the second decimal (row 1.2, column 0.05 is z = 1.25).

  • The percentile assumes the values are close to normally distributed. A z score is still a fair measure of distance for skewed data, but the share below it then has to be counted from the data.
  • For a sample, use the sample mean and the sample standard deviation (divided by n - 1). The standard deviation calculator gives both.

How the Z Score Calculator works

A z score says how many standard deviations a value sits from the mean. The z score formula is one subtraction and one division: z = (x - μ) / σ, where x is the value, μ is the mean and σ is the standard deviation. A test score of 85 in a class with a mean of 70 and a standard deviation of 10 has z = (85 - 70) / 10 = 1.50. A value below the mean gets a negative z, and the mean itself scores 0.

The z score becomes a percentile through the standard normal curve. If the scores are roughly normal, the area below z = 1.50 is 0.9332, so 85 beats about 93.32% of the class and sits at the 93rd percentile. The area to the right is what is left over: 0.0668.

A z-score table lists the area to the left of z. Round z to two decimals. The row gives the whole number and first decimal, the column gives the second decimal, and the cell where they cross is the area. For z = 1.96 that is row 1.9 and column 0.06, which reads 0.9750. Negative values have their own half of the table, and the curve is symmetric, so the area left of -z equals the area right of z. The table under the result switches halves to match the sign of your z.

Areas between two values come from the same curve. Between z = -1 and z = 1 lies 68.27% of it, between -2 and 2 lies 95.45%, and between -3 and 3 lies 99.73%. Those are the exact figures behind the 68-95-99.7 rule. For any two z values, the area between them is the left area at the larger one minus the left area at the smaller one.

Going the other way, from a percentile to z, is the inverse normal. The 95th percentile is z = 1.6449, and the middle 95% runs from -1.96 to 1.96. That 1.96 is the critical value behind every 95% confidence interval.

The percentile reading holds only for data close to normal. Incomes and waiting times are skewed, and for them the share of values below a z score has to be counted from the data.

Z Score Calculator FAQ

What is the z score formula?

z = (x - μ) / σ: the value minus the mean, divided by the standard deviation. For a sample, use the sample mean and the sample standard deviation. The answer is in standard deviations, so z = 2 means two standard deviations above the mean whatever the original units were.

How do I read a z-table?

Round z to two decimals. Find the row for the whole number and first decimal, then the column for the second decimal. The entry is the area to the left of z. For z = 1.50 that is row 1.5, column 0.00: 0.9332. Subtract it from 1 for the area to the right.

What does a negative z score mean?

The value is below the mean. A z of -1.50 is one and a half standard deviations below it, and the area to its left is 0.0668, so the value sits at about the 7th percentile.

What z score is the 95th percentile?

z = 1.6449, usually rounded to 1.645. A 95% confidence interval uses 1.96 instead, because it leaves 2.5% in each tail rather than 5% in one.

Is a z score the same as a percentile?

No. A z score is a distance from the mean in standard deviations, and a percentile is the share of values below a point. One converts to the other through a distribution, and the conversion here assumes the normal distribution.
