How the Percent to Decimal Converter works

Percent means per hundred, so to convert a percent to a decimal, divide by 100: decimal = percent ÷ 100. On paper that moves the decimal point two places to the left. 12.5% becomes 0.125, 45% becomes 0.45, and 7% becomes 0.07, with a zero filling the empty place.

To write the percent as a fraction, put it over 100 and reduce. 12.5% is 12.5/100. Multiply the top and bottom by 10 to clear the decimal point, giving 125/1000, then divide both by their greatest common factor, 125, to get 1/8.

Percents over 100 give numbers over 1. 125% is 1.25, which is 125/100 = 5/4, or the mixed number 1 1/4.

A percent written with a fraction converts the same way once the fraction is folded in. 33 1/3% is 100/3 percent, and 100/3 ÷ 100 = 1/3. As a decimal that is 0.333..., which never ends and is written 0.(3), with the repeating digit in brackets.

Going the other way, a decimal becomes a percent by multiplying by 100, and a fraction becomes one by dividing the numerator by the denominator first: 3/8 is 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, which is 37.5%.

Percent to Decimal Converter FAQ

What is 5% as a decimal?

0.05. Dividing 5 by 100 moves the decimal point two places left, past the 5 and one empty place, which is filled with a zero. Writing 0.5 instead is the common slip; 0.5 is 50%.

Is 0.5% the same as 0.5?

No. 0.5% is half of one percent, 0.5 ÷ 100 = 0.005, or 1/200. The decimal 0.5 is 50%, a hundred times larger.

What is 150% as a decimal?

1.5, because 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5. As a fraction it is 150/100 = 3/2, or 1 1/2. Anything over 100% is more than the whole.

How do spreadsheets store percentages?

As decimals. A cell showing 12.5% holds 0.125, and the percent format only changes how it is displayed. Typing 12.5 into a cell already formatted as a percent shows 12.5%, while multiplying a cell holding 12.5 by a percent format shows 1250%.
