How the Percent to Decimal Converter works

The formula is percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. For 3/8, 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, and 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%.

When the denominator divides 100, scale the fraction instead of dividing. 20 × 5 = 100, so 7/20 = 35/100 = 35%, and 3/4 = 75/100 = 75%. Halves, quarters, fifths, tenths, twentieths, twenty-fifths and fiftieths all work this way.

Some fractions give a percent that never ends. 1/3 is 33.333...%, written 33.(3)% with the repeating digit in brackets, or exactly 33 1/3%. 1/6 is 16.(6)% = 16 2/3%, and 1/7 is 14.(285714)%. A fraction in lowest terms gives a percent that ends only when its denominator has no prime factors except 2 and 5.

A mixed number converts as a whole: 1 1/4 is 5/4, which is 125%. Any fraction larger than 1 is more than 100%.

A test score is a fraction too. 42 right out of 48 is 42/48 = 7/8, which is 87.5% in the fraction to percentage converter.
