How the Percent to Decimal Converter works

The formula is percent = decimal × 100, which moves the decimal point two places to the right and adds the percent sign. 0.625 × 100 = 62.5, so 0.625 is 62.5%.

Fill the empty places with zeros. 0.4 is 40%, because moving the point two places needs a second digit, and the whole number 3 is 300%. A decimal under 0.01 stays under 1%: 0.0035 is 0.35%.

Repeating decimals keep repeating. Two thirds is 0.666..., and 0.(6) × 100 = 66.(6)%, which is exactly 66 2/3% and 66.67% rounded to two places. Type the repeating digits in brackets, 0.(6), and the decimal to percent calculator works from the exact fraction, 2/3, rather than from a rounding of it.

The fraction comes from place value. 0.625 is 625 thousandths, 625/1000, and dividing the top and bottom by 125 gives 5/8.

The slip to watch for is converting a number that is already a percent. A rate of 0.05 is 5%, and a rate of 5 is 500%. Interest rates, tax rates and test scores are often stored as decimals in a spreadsheet and written as percents on paper, so check which form a number is in first.
