Eastern Time to GMT (ET to GMT)
To convert Eastern Time to GMT (ET to GMT): in summer 10:00 AM EDT is 2:00 PM GMT, and in winter 10:00 AM EST is 3:00 PM GMT. The gap moves with US daylight saving, as explained below.
In Greenwich Mean Time
- On a 24-hour clock
- 10:00 EDT is 14:00 GMT
- The offsets
- EDT is UTC-04:00, GMT is UTC+00:00
- Difference
- GMT is 4 hours ahead of EDT
- Date
- Same calendar day.
- This gap does NOT hold all year Convert through the offset in force on the date you care about.
- The two ends switch on different dates, or one does not switch at all.
- EDT is only in force part of the year United States: daylight time starts the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 local time and ends the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 local time (Energy Policy Act of 2005, in force since 2007). In 2026 that is 2026-03-08 to 2026-11-01. New York is on EST between those dates.
- otherwise EST, UTC-05:00
- Military time zone letters Z (Zulu) is UTC. A to M run east of Greenwich an hour apart, N to Y west, and J is left out. A letter names an offset, so a zone that switches to daylight time changes letter: EST is R, EDT is Q.
- EDT is Q (Quebec), GMT is Z (Zulu)
- In Zulu notation Four digits on a 24-hour clock, no colon, then Z for UTC.

How the Time Zone Converter works
ET means Eastern Time, whichever of its two offsets is in force: EST at UTC-05:00 in winter, and EDT at UTC-04:00 from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. GMT is UTC+00:00, taken here literally as written: as an abbreviation it means that offset all year, whatever the places that use it in winter do in summer. So converting ET to GMT is two different subtractions depending on the date: GMT is 4 hours ahead of ET in summer and 5 hours ahead of it in winter.
The gap between these two is not the same all year, which is the thing to get right. ET shifts for daylight saving and GMT does not, so GMT is 4 hours ahead of ET from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and 5 hours ahead of it for the rest of the year. In 2026 the switch dates are 2026-03-08 and 2026-11-01.
Worked through: in summer, 10:00 AM EDT is 2:00 PM GMT. In winter, 10:00 AM EST is 3:00 PM GMT.
Two readings of GMT give two different answers for most of the year, and it is worth deciding which you mean. Read literally, GMT is UTC+00:00 and never moves, so Eastern time is five hours behind it in winter and four in summer, which is the reading this converter uses. But most people who type GMT mean London, and London is on BST from late March to late October. Read that way, New York and London are five hours apart almost all year, because both move. The exceptions are about three weeks in March and one week around the start of November, when only one side has switched and the gap is four.
EST to GMT has its own page, and it is a different question. That page converts the abbreviations exactly as written, which is right when an invitation names a specific offset. This one converts the zone (the clock on the wall in New York), which is almost always what someone typing ET to GMT wants. The converter above is preset to the summer pairing, EDT to GMT, because that is in force for about eight months of the year; for a date between November and March, pick EST and GMT in the lists instead.
Common times for this pair, summer and winter:
- 8:00 AM EDT is 12:00 PM GMT; in winter, 8:00 AM EST is 1:00 PM GMT - 10:00 AM EDT is 2:00 PM GMT; in winter, 10:00 AM EST is 3:00 PM GMT - 12:00 PM EDT is 4:00 PM GMT; in winter, 12:00 PM EST is 5:00 PM GMT - 5:00 PM EDT is 9:00 PM GMT; in winter, 5:00 PM EST is 10:00 PM GMT
Time Zone Converter FAQ
What is the time difference between ET and GMT?
It depends on the date. GMT is 4 hours ahead of ET from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, while EDT to GMT applies, and 5 hours ahead of it for the rest of the year, under EST to GMT.
What time is 10:00 AM ET in GMT?
In summer, 10:00 AM EDT is 2:00 PM GMT. In winter, 10:00 AM EST is 3:00 PM GMT. The hour of difference between those two answers is daylight saving, applied at one end only.
Is ET the same as EST?
Only in winter. ET is Eastern Time, whichever offset is in force: EST at UTC-05:00 from the first Sunday in November until the second Sunday in March, and EDT at UTC-04:00 the rest of the time. EST written in July is, strictly, an hour away from the clock in New York. That is why ET is the safer thing to write in an invitation that has to be right all year.
When does the difference between ET and GMT change?
At the United States daylight saving switch, which starts on the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 local time and ends on the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 local time (Energy Policy Act of 2005, in force since 2007). In 2026 that is 2026-03-08 to 2026-11-01. Between those dates the gap is 4 hours; outside them, 5 hours.
