Pacific Time to GMT (PT to GMT)
To convert Pacific Time to GMT (PT to GMT): in summer 9:00 AM PDT is 4:00 PM GMT, and in winter 9:00 AM PST is 5:00 PM GMT. The gap moves with US daylight saving, as explained below.
In Greenwich Mean Time
- On a 24-hour clock
- 09:00 PDT is 16:00 GMT
- The offsets
- PDT is UTC-07:00, GMT is UTC+00:00
- Difference
- GMT is 7 hours ahead of PDT
- Date
- Same calendar day.
- This gap does NOT hold all year Convert through the offset in force on the date you care about.
- The two ends switch on different dates, or one does not switch at all.
- PDT is only in force part of the year United States: daylight time starts the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 local time and ends the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 local time (Energy Policy Act of 2005, in force since 2007). In 2026 that is 2026-03-08 to 2026-11-01. Los Angeles is on PST between those dates.
- otherwise PST, UTC-08:00
- Military time zone letters Z (Zulu) is UTC. A to M run east of Greenwich an hour apart, N to Y west, and J is left out. A letter names an offset, so a zone that switches to daylight time changes letter: EST is R, EDT is Q.
- PDT is T (Tango), GMT is Z (Zulu)
- In Zulu notation Four digits on a 24-hour clock, no colon, then Z for UTC.

How the Time Zone Converter works
PT means Pacific Time, whichever of its two offsets is in force: PST at UTC-08:00 in winter, and PDT at UTC-07:00 from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. GMT is UTC+00:00, taken here literally as written: as an abbreviation it means that offset all year, whatever the places that use it in winter do in summer. So converting PT to GMT is two different subtractions depending on the date: GMT is 7 hours ahead of PT in summer and 8 hours ahead of it in winter.
The gap between these two is not the same all year, which is the thing to get right. PT shifts for daylight saving and GMT does not, so GMT is 7 hours ahead of PT from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and 8 hours ahead of it for the rest of the year. In 2026 the switch dates are 2026-03-08 and 2026-11-01.
Worked through: in summer, 9:00 AM PDT is 4:00 PM GMT. In winter, 9:00 AM PST is 5:00 PM GMT.
Read literally, GMT never moves, so Pacific time is eight hours behind it in winter and seven in summer, which is the reading this converter uses. A Pacific team with a deadline written in GMT (common in aviation, shipping and anything run from the UK) gains that hour in summer: 23:59 GMT is 4:59 PM PDT in July but 3:59 PM PST in January. If GMT here really means London, the answer is different: London's own switch to BST keeps it eight hours ahead of California nearly all year, and only in the March and late-October weeks when the two countries have switched on different dates does the gap drop to seven.
PST to GMT has its own page, and it is a different question. That page converts the abbreviations exactly as written, which is right when an invitation names a specific offset. This one converts the zone (the clock on the wall in Los Angeles), which is almost always what someone typing PT to GMT wants. The converter above is preset to the summer pairing, PDT to GMT, because that is in force for about eight months of the year; for a date between November and March, pick PST and GMT in the lists instead.
Common times for this pair, summer and winter:
- 7:00 AM PDT is 2:00 PM GMT; in winter, 7:00 AM PST is 3:00 PM GMT - 9:00 AM PDT is 4:00 PM GMT; in winter, 9:00 AM PST is 5:00 PM GMT - 10:00 AM PDT is 5:00 PM GMT; in winter, 10:00 AM PST is 6:00 PM GMT - 4:00 PM PDT is 11:00 PM GMT; in winter, 4:00 PM PST is 12:00 AM GMT the next day
Time Zone Converter FAQ
What is the time difference between PT and GMT?
It depends on the date. GMT is 7 hours ahead of PT from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, while PDT to GMT applies, and 8 hours ahead of it for the rest of the year, under PST to GMT.
What time is 9:00 AM PT in GMT?
In summer, 9:00 AM PDT is 4:00 PM GMT. In winter, 9:00 AM PST is 5:00 PM GMT. The hour of difference between those two answers is daylight saving, applied at one end only.
Is PT the same as PST?
Only in winter. PT is Pacific Time, whichever offset is in force: PST at UTC-08:00 from the first Sunday in November until the second Sunday in March, and PDT at UTC-07:00 the rest of the time. PST written in July is, strictly, an hour away from the clock in Los Angeles. That is why PT is the safer thing to write in an invitation that has to be right all year.
When does the difference between PT and GMT change?
At the United States daylight saving switch, which starts on the second Sunday in March, at 02:00 local time and ends on the first Sunday in November, at 02:00 local time (Energy Policy Act of 2005, in force since 2007). In 2026 that is 2026-03-08 to 2026-11-01. Between those dates the gap is 7 hours; outside them, 8 hours.
