How the Time Converter works

One hour is exactly 60 minutes. That is a fixed convention, not a measurement: 60 seconds to the minute, 60 minutes to the hour, 24 hours to the day and 7 days to the week, with the second as the SI base unit. Leap seconds adjust the clock against the Earth's rotation; they do not change the length of a minute or an hour as a unit, so this factor is exact.

Worked through: 1.5 h x 60 = 90 min.

Going the other way, one minute is 0.0166666667 hours.

For mental arithmetic: Multiply by 6 and add a zero. The quarters are worth memorizing outright: 0.25 is 15 minutes, 0.5 is 30, 0.75 is 45.

The conversion payroll runs on, and the reason the time converter exists. A timesheet records 7.25 hours and a clock reads 7:15, and the two are the same quantity written in bases that do not agree: 0.25 of an hour is 15 minutes, not 25. Rounding an hours figure to two decimals and then reading the decimals as minutes is the single most common payroll arithmetic error, and it costs money in both directions.

Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 0.25 h carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.

Time Converter FAQ

How many minutes are in a hour?

60. That is exact by convention: the units of the clock are fixed multiples of the second.

What is 1.5 h in minutes?

90 min. Multiply by 60: 1.5 h x 60 = 90 min.

How do I convert minutes back to hours?

Divide by 60, or equivalently multiply by 0.016666667. One minute is 0.016666667 hours. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.

Is there a quick way to do this in my head?

Multiply by 6 and add a zero. The quarters are worth memorizing outright: 0.25 is 15 minutes, 0.5 is 30, 0.75 is 45. It is close enough for everyday use.
