How the Time Converter works
One minute is exactly 60 seconds. That is a fixed convention, not a measurement: 60 seconds to the minute, 60 minutes to the hour, 24 hours to the day and 7 days to the week, with the second as the SI base unit. Leap seconds adjust the clock against the Earth's rotation; they do not change the length of a minute or an hour as a unit, so this factor is exact.
Worked through: 15 min x 60 = 900 s.
Going the other way, one second is 0.0166666667 minutes.
For mental arithmetic: Multiply by 6 and add a zero.
Sixty is the one conversion factor here that predates the metric system by about four thousand years. Minutes and seconds are sexagesimal because Babylonian astronomy counted in sixties, and the SI kept the second as its base unit of time while declining to make the minute decimal. Time is the one dimension where the modern system gave up and adopted the ancient one. There is no metric minute.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 1 min carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Time Converter FAQ
How many seconds are in a minute?
60. That is exact by convention: the units of the clock are fixed multiples of the second.
What is 15 min in seconds?
900 s. Multiply by 60: 15 min x 60 = 900 s.
How do I convert seconds back to minutes?
Divide by 60, or equivalently multiply by 0.016666667. One second is 0.016666667 minutes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Multiply by 6 and add a zero. It is close enough for everyday use.
