How the Time Converter works

One second is exactly 0.0166666667 minutes. That is a fixed convention, not a measurement: 60 seconds to the minute, 60 minutes to the hour, 24 hours to the day and 7 days to the week, with the second as the SI base unit. Leap seconds adjust the clock against the Earth's rotation; they do not change the length of a minute or an hour as a unit, so this factor is exact.

Worked through: 100 s x 0.0166666667 = 1.66667 min.

Going the other way, one minute is 60 seconds.

For mental arithmetic: Divide by 6 and drop a zero. Or remember that 90 seconds is 1.5 minutes and scale.

Dividing by 60 rarely gives a whole number, and what you do with the remainder is the decision this conversion turns on. 100 seconds is 1.6667 minutes as a decimal and 1 minute 40 seconds as a clock reading, and those are different answers to different questions: the first goes in a spreadsheet, the second on a stopwatch. Video, audio and race times use the second form; anything that will be summed or averaged needs the first.

Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 30 s carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.

Time Converter FAQ

How many minutes are in a second?

0.016666667. That is exact by convention: the units of the clock are fixed multiples of the second.

What is 100 s in minutes?

1.66667 min. Multiply by 0.016666667: 100 s x 0.0166666667 = 1.66667 min.

How do I convert minutes back to seconds?

Divide by 0.016666667, or equivalently multiply by 60. One minute is 60 seconds. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.

Is there a quick way to do this in my head?

Divide by 6 and drop a zero. Or remember that 90 seconds is 1.5 minutes and scale. It is close enough for everyday use.
