Convert seconds to milliseconds
To convert seconds to milliseconds: one second is 1,000 milliseconds, so 2 seconds is 2,000 milliseconds. The factor is exact.
In milliseconds
- Conversion factor Exact.
- 1 second = 1,000 milliseconds
- In every unit
- 2,000 ms 2 s 0.033333 min 0.00055556 h 0.000023148 day 0.0000033069 week 7.6053e-7 month 6.3377e-8 year
- As hours and minutes
- 0:00
- 7.25 decimal hours Multiply the fractional part by 60: 0.25 x 60 = 15 minutes.
- 7 hours 15 minutes (7:15)
- And the other way
- 7:15 is 7.25 decimal hours
- Minutes that convert cleanly
- 15 = 0.25, 30 = 0.50, 45 = 0.75
| Minutes | Decimal hours | Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 30 | 0.5 |

How the Time Converter works
One second is exactly 1,000 milliseconds. That is a fixed convention, not a measurement: 60 seconds to the minute, 60 minutes to the hour, 24 hours to the day and 7 days to the week, with the second as the SI base unit. Leap seconds adjust the clock against the Earth's rotation; they do not change the length of a minute or an hour as a unit, so this factor is exact.
Worked through: 2 s x 1,000 = 2,000 ms.
Going the other way, one millisecond is 0.001 seconds.
For mental arithmetic: Add three zeros.
Multiply by a thousand. The direction that matters when a human-written timeout meets an API that wants milliseconds, and the direction where an error is silent rather than loud: a 30-second timeout entered as 30 instead of 30000 fires in 30 milliseconds and looks like a network failure. Web performance budgets live here: the Core Web Vitals thresholds are 2.5 seconds for LCP and 200 milliseconds for INP, which are quoted in different units for no better reason than readability.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 0.1 s carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Time Converter FAQ
How many milliseconds are in a second?
1,000. That is exact by convention: the units of the clock are fixed multiples of the second.
What is 2 s in milliseconds?
2,000 ms. Multiply by 1,000: 2 s x 1,000 = 2,000 ms.
How do I convert milliseconds back to seconds?
Divide by 1,000, or equivalently multiply by 0.001. One millisecond is 0.001 seconds. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Add three zeros. It is close enough for everyday use.
