Mebibytes to kibibytes (MiB to KiB)
To convert mebibytes to kibibytes (MiB to KiB): one mebibyte is 1,024 kibibytes, so 8 MiB is 8,192 KiB.
In kibibytes
- Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
- 1 mebibyte = 1,024 kibibytes
- The other way
- 1 kibibyte = 0.0009765625 mebibytes
- Working
- 8 x 1,024 = 8,192
- 8 MiB in every unit
- 8,388,608 B 8,388.6 kB 8.3886 MB 0.0083886 GB 0.0000083886 TB 8.3886e-9 PB 8,192 KiB 8 MiB 0.0078125 GiB 0.0000076294 TiB 7.4506e-9 PiB
- Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.
- 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824
| MiB | KiB |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1,024 |
| 2 | 2,048 |
| 5 | 5,120 |
| 10 | 10,240 |
| 25 | 25,600 |
| 50 | 51,200 |
| 100 | 102,400 |
How the Unit Converter works
One mebibyte is exactly 1,024 kibibytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.
Worked through: 8 MiB x 1,024 = 8,192 KiB.
Going the other way, one kibibyte is 0.0009765625 mebibytes.
For mental arithmetic: Multiply by 1,024. 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB and 4 MiB is 4,096 KiB.
Exactly 1,024 KiB to the MiB. Settings that count in kibibytes are older and lower-level than the ones that count in mebibytes: the shell's ulimit -v and many kernel parameters take KiB, and /proc/meminfo on Linux prints kB that are really KiB. So 512 MiB entered there is 524,288, not 512,000. One MiB is also 256 memory pages of 4 KiB each, which is the arithmetic behind page-table and huge-page sizing.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 0.5 MiB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Unit Converter FAQ
How many kibibytes are in a mebibyte?
1,024. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).
What is 8 MiB in kibibytes?
8,192 KiB. Multiply by 1,024: 8 MiB x 1,024 = 8,192 KiB.
How do I convert kibibytes back to mebibytes?
Divide by 1,024, or equivalently multiply by 0.0009765625. One kibibyte is 0.0009765625 mebibytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Multiply by 1,024. 1 MiB is 1,024 KiB and 4 MiB is 4,096 KiB. It is close enough for everyday use.
