Tebibytes to gibibytes (TiB to GiB)

To convert tebibytes to gibibytes (TiB to GiB): one tebibyte is 1,024 gibibytes, so 8 TiB is 8,192 GiB.

Swap units: GiB to TiB

In gibibytes8,192 GiB

Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
1 tebibyte = 1,024 gibibytes
The other way
1 gibibyte = 0.0009765625 tebibytes
Working
8 x 1,024 = 8,192

Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.

How the Unit Converter works

One tebibyte is exactly 1,024 gibibytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.

Worked through: 8 TiB x 1,024 = 8,192 GiB.

Going the other way, one gibibyte is 0.0009765625 tebibytes.

For mental arithmetic: Multiply by 1,024. 2 TiB is 2,048 GiB and 16 TiB is 16,384 GiB.

Exactly 1,024 GiB to the TiB. The usual reason to go this way is a provisioning form that takes gibibytes when the plan was written in tebibytes: a block volume quoted at a 16 TiB maximum is 16,384 GiB, and typing 16,000 leaves 384 GiB, about 2.3%, unallocated. Both units are binary, so there is no decimal-versus-binary question in this step; that only arises when one side is TB or GB.

Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 0.5 TiB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.

Unit Converter FAQ

How many gibibytes are in a tebibyte?

1,024. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).

What is 8 TiB in gibibytes?

8,192 GiB. Multiply by 1,024: 8 TiB x 1,024 = 8,192 GiB.

How do I convert gibibytes back to tebibytes?

Divide by 1,024, or equivalently multiply by 0.0009765625. One gibibyte is 0.0009765625 tebibytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.

Is there a quick way to do this in my head?

Multiply by 1,024. 2 TiB is 2,048 GiB and 16 TiB is 16,384 GiB. It is close enough for everyday use.
