Mebibytes to gibibytes (MiB to GiB)
To convert mebibytes to gibibytes (MiB to GiB): one mebibyte is 0.0009765625 gibibytes, so 1,536 MiB is 1.5 GiB.
In gibibytes
- Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
- 1 mebibyte = 0.0009765625 gibibytes
- The other way
- 1 gibibyte = 1,024 mebibytes
- Working
- 1,536 x 0.0009765625 = 1.5
- 1,536 MiB in every unit
- 1.6106e9 B 1,610,613 kB 1,610.6 MB 1.6106 GB 0.0016106 TB 0.0000016106 PB 1,572,864 KiB 1,536 MiB 1.5 GiB 0.0014648 TiB 0.0000014305 PiB
- Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.
- 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824

How the Unit Converter works
One mebibyte is exactly 0.0009765625 gibibytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.
Worked through: 1,536 MiB x 0.0009765625 = 1.5 GiB.
Going the other way, one gibibyte is 1,024 mebibytes.
For mental arithmetic: Divide by 1,024. 512 MiB is 0.5 GiB and 1,536 MiB is 1.5 GiB.
Both units are binary, so the factor is exactly 1/1,024 with no decimal-versus-binary question at all. This is the conversion for memory settings, which are written in whichever unit is shorter: a container limit of 1536Mi is 1.5 GiB, a Java heap of 3072m is 3 GiB, and 512 MiB is exactly half a gibibyte. Mixing this up with MB to GB, which divides by 1,000, makes 1,536 into 1.536 instead of 1.5, an error of 2.4%.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 256 MiB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Unit Converter FAQ
How many gibibytes are in a mebibyte?
0.0009765625. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).
What is 1,536 MiB in gibibytes?
1.5 GiB. Multiply by 0.0009765625: 1,536 MiB x 0.0009765625 = 1.5 GiB.
How do I convert gibibytes back to mebibytes?
Divide by 0.0009765625, or equivalently multiply by 1,024. One gibibyte is 1,024 mebibytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Divide by 1,024. 512 MiB is 0.5 GiB and 1,536 MiB is 1.5 GiB. It is close enough for everyday use.
