Mebibytes to megabytes (MiB to MB)

To convert mebibytes to megabytes (MiB to MB): one mebibyte is 1.048576 megabytes, so 64 MiB is 67.1089 MB.

In megabytes67.1089 MB

Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
1 mebibyte = 1.048576 megabytes
The other way
1 megabyte = 0.9536743164 mebibytes
Working

Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.

How the Unit Converter works

One mebibyte is exactly 1.048576 megabytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.

Worked through: 64 MiB x 1.048576 = 67.1089 MB.

Going the other way, one megabyte is 0.9536743164 mebibytes.

For mental arithmetic: Multiply by 1.05, or add about 5%.

A mebibyte is 2^20 bytes, 1,048,576, which is 4.9% more than a decimal megabyte of 1,000,000. The gap is small enough to ignore in a file size and large enough to matter in anything sized to fit: partitioning tools align partitions on 1 MiB boundaries, firmware images and video memory are quoted in MiB, and an upload limit stated as 25 MB is about 23.8 MiB. When a figure in MB will not fit something measured in MiB, this is usually the reason.

Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 1 MiB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.

Unit Converter FAQ

How many megabytes are in a mebibyte?

1.048576. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).

What is 64 MiB in megabytes?

67.1089 MB. Multiply by 1.048576: 64 MiB x 1.048576 = 67.1089 MB.

How do I convert megabytes back to mebibytes?

Divide by 1.048576, or equivalently multiply by 0.95367432. One megabyte is 0.95367432 mebibytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.

Is there a quick way to do this in my head?

Multiply by 1.05, or add about 5%. It is close enough for everyday use.
