Gibibytes to gigabytes (GiB to GB)
To convert gibibytes to gigabytes (GiB to GB): one gibibyte is 1.0737418 gigabytes, so 16 GiB is 17.1799 GB.
In gigabytes
- Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
- 1 gibibyte = 1.073741824 gigabytes
- The other way
- 1 gigabyte = 0.9313225746 gibibytes
- Working
- 16 x 1.073741824 = 17.1799
- 16 GiB in every unit
- 1.7180e10 B 17,179,869 kB 17,180 MB 17.18 GB 0.01718 TB 0.00001718 PB 16,777,216 KiB 16,384 MiB 16 GiB 0.015625 TiB 0.000015259 PiB
- Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.
- 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824
| GiB | GB |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1.07374 |
| 2 | 2.14748 |
| 5 | 5.36871 |
| 10 | 10.7374 |
| 25 | 26.8435 |
| 50 | 53.6871 |
| 100 | 107.374 |
How the Unit Converter works
One gibibyte is exactly 1.073741824 gigabytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.
Worked through: 16 GiB x 1.07374182 = 17.1799 GB.
Going the other way, one gigabyte is 0.9313225746 gibibytes.
For mental arithmetic: Multiply by 1.074, or add about 7%.
GiB vs GB: a gibibyte is 2^30 bytes, 1,073,741,824, and a gigabyte is 10^9, so one GiB is about 7.4% more than one GB. GiB is what Linux prints (free -h and df -h count in powers of 1,024), what a cloud provider means when it sizes a virtual machine's memory or a block volume in GiB, and what Kubernetes means by Gi. GB is what a drive box, a phone and most download pages mean. Converting a 16 GiB server to decimal gives 17.18 GB, which is why a spec sheet and a terminal can describe the same machine with different numbers.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 1 GiB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Unit Converter FAQ
How many gigabytes are in a gibibyte?
1.0737418. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).
What is 16 GiB in gigabytes?
17.1799 GB. Multiply by 1.0737418: 16 GiB x 1.07374182 = 17.1799 GB.
How do I convert gigabytes back to gibibytes?
Divide by 1.0737418, or equivalently multiply by 0.93132257. One gigabyte is 0.93132257 gibibytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Multiply by 1.074, or add about 7%. It is close enough for everyday use.
