Gigabytes to gibibytes (GB to GiB)
To convert gigabytes to gibibytes (GB to GiB): one gigabyte is 0.93132257 gibibytes, so 16 GB is 14.9012 GiB.
In gibibytes
- Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
- 1 gigabyte = 0.9313225746 gibibytes
- The other way
- 1 gibibyte = 1.073741824 gigabytes
- Working
- 16 x 0.9313225746 = 14.9012
- 16 GB in every unit
- 1.6000e10 B 16,000,000 kB 16,000 MB 16 GB 0.016 TB 0.000016 PB 15,625,000 KiB 15,259 MiB 14.901 GiB 0.014552 TiB 0.000014211 PiB
- Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.
- 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824
| GB | GiB |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0.931323 |
| 2 | 1.86265 |
| 5 | 4.65661 |
| 10 | 9.31323 |
| 25 | 23.2831 |
| 50 | 46.5661 |
| 100 | 93.1323 |
How the Unit Converter works
One gigabyte is exactly 0.9313225746 gibibytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.
Worked through: 16 GB x 0.931322575 = 14.9012 GiB.
Going the other way, one gibibyte is 1.073741824 gigabytes.
For mental arithmetic: Multiply by 0.931, or take off about 7%.
A gigabyte is 10^9 bytes and a gibibyte is 2^30, which is 1,073,741,824, so a gigabyte is about 93.1% of a gibibyte. The gibibyte was standardized by the IEC in 1998 precisely to end this ambiguity, and adoption has been partial at best: Linux tools and RAM specifications use the binary units, drive marketing and most cloud billing use the decimal ones. RAM is the one place where the binary unit is genuinely natural, because memory is addressed in powers of two; storage never was.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 1 GB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Unit Converter FAQ
How many gibibytes are in a gigabyte?
0.93132257. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).
What is 16 GB in gibibytes?
14.9012 GiB. Multiply by 0.93132257: 16 GB x 0.931322575 = 14.9012 GiB.
How do I convert gibibytes back to gigabytes?
Divide by 0.93132257, or equivalently multiply by 1.0737418. One gibibyte is 1.0737418 gigabytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Multiply by 0.931, or take off about 7%. It is close enough for everyday use.
