How the Fraction Calculator works

To change an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole-number answer is the whole part, the remainder is the new numerator, and the denominator stays the same. 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2, so 17/5 = 3 2/5.

To go from a mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 3 × 5 + 2 = 17, so 3 2/5 = 17/5. Mixed numbers are converted this way before they are multiplied or divided: 3 2/5 × 2 = 34/5 = 6 4/5.

An improper fraction has a numerator at least as large as its denominator, so it is worth 1 or more: 5/5 is 1 and 17/5 is 3.4. A proper fraction such as 2/5 is less than 1 and has no whole part to take out.

Reduce as well. 22/4 is 5 2/4 by division, and 2/4 reduces to 1/2, so 22/4 = 5 1/2 = 11/2. Reducing first or last gives the same answer.

A minus sign belongs to the whole mixed number: -17/5 is -3 2/5, which means -(3 + 2/5).
