Mixed Number Calculator

The mixed number calculator turns 2 1/3 and 1 3/4 into improper fractions, adds them over a common denominator, and returns 49/12 as the mixed number 4 1/12.

When rewriting over a denominator, the denominator to rewrite the first fraction over.

Answer49/12

As a mixed number
4 1/12
As a decimal The digits in brackets repeat forever. A decimal cannot write this fraction exactly, which is why the fraction is the better answer.
4.08(3)
The problem
2 1/3 + 1 3/4 = 49/12
As improper fractions Whole number times the denominator, plus the numerator, over the same denominator. A minus sign applies to the whole mixed number.
2 1/3 = 7/3, 1 3/4 = 7/4
Common denominator The least common multiple of 3 and 4. They share no factor, so it is simply their product.
12
Rewritten over it
28/12 + 21/12 = 49/12
Reduced
already in lowest terms
As a percentage
408.3333%
Comparison Compared by cross-multiplying rather than by converting to decimals, so the answer is exact even when the decimals are not.
7/3 is larger than 7/4
  • Every answer is exact and in lowest terms. No step converts to a decimal, which is what lets 1/3 + 1/6 come out as exactly 1/2.
  • A mixed number's sign applies to the whole quantity: -2 1/3 means -(2 + 1/3), which is -7/3.

How the Fraction Calculator works

A mixed number is a whole number and a proper fraction written together: 2 1/3 means 2 + 1/3. Every operation on mixed numbers starts the same way, by turning each one into an improper fraction.

Converting. Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the denominator. 2 1/3 becomes (2 x 3 + 1)/3 = 7/3, and 1 3/4 becomes (1 x 4 + 3)/4 = 7/4.

Adding and subtracting. Put both improper fractions over a common denominator. For 7/3 + 7/4 the least common denominator is 12, so the sum is 28/12 + 21/12 = 49/12. Some people add the whole numbers and the fractions separately instead (2 + 1 = 3, then 1/3 + 3/4 = 13/12, then carry the extra 1 to get 4 1/12). That works for addition and gets messy for subtraction when the second fraction is the larger one, which is why converting first is the safer habit.

Multiplying and dividing. Never multiply the whole parts and the fractions separately: 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 is not 4 1/4. Convert first, 5/2 x 5/2 = 25/4, which is 6 1/4. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second improper fraction.

Converting back. Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole part and the remainder is the new numerator: 49 / 12 = 4 remainder 1, so 49/12 = 4 1/12. The calculator shows the answer both ways, along with the exact decimal, 4.08(3), where the bracketed 3 repeats forever.

Negative mixed numbers. The minus sign applies to the whole thing: -2 1/3 is -(2 + 1/3) = -7/3, not -2 + 1/3. Enter it as whole number -2, numerator 1, denominator 3.

Fraction Calculator FAQ

How do you add mixed numbers?

Convert each to an improper fraction, add over a common denominator, then convert back. 2 1/3 + 1 3/4 = 7/3 + 7/4 = 28/12 + 21/12 = 49/12 = 4 1/12.

How do you turn a mixed number into an improper fraction?

Whole number times denominator, plus numerator, over the same denominator. 1 3/4 = (1 x 4 + 3)/4 = 7/4.

How do you multiply mixed numbers?

Convert both to improper fractions first, then multiply straight across. 2 1/2 x 1 1/3 = 5/2 x 4/3 = 20/6 = 10/3 = 3 1/3. Multiplying the whole parts and the fractions separately gives the wrong answer.

Is a mixed fraction the same as a mixed number?

Yes. Mixed fraction and mixed number are two names for a whole number written beside a proper fraction, such as 4 1/12, so a mixed fraction calculator and a mixed number calculator do the same job.
