Gigabytes to megabytes (GB to MB)
To convert gigabytes to megabytes (GB to MB): one gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes, so 8 GB is 8,000 MB.
In megabytes
- Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
- 1 gigabyte = 1,000 megabytes
- The other way
- 1 megabyte = 0.001 gigabytes
- Working
- 8 x 1,000 = 8,000
- 8 GB in every unit
- 8.0000e9 B 8,000,000 kB 8,000 MB 8 GB 0.008 TB 0.000008 PB 7,812,500 KiB 7,629.4 MiB 7.4506 GiB 0.007276 TiB 0.0000071054 PiB
- Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.
- 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824
| GB | MB |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1,000 |
| 2 | 2,000 |
| 5 | 5,000 |
| 10 | 10,000 |
| 25 | 25,000 |
| 50 | 50,000 |
| 100 | 100,000 |
How the Unit Converter works
One gigabyte is exactly 1,000 megabytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.
Worked through: 8 GB x 1,000 = 8,000 MB.
Going the other way, one megabyte is 0.001 gigabytes.
For mental arithmetic: Add three zeros.
Multiply by a thousand, and be ready for the answer to disagree with a file manager. The difference comes from the conversion the operating system is quietly doing: Windows reports a 1 GB file as 953 MB because it is dividing by 1,024 twice while printing the decimal prefix. macOS and Linux switched to decimal reporting years ago, which is why the same file can show two different sizes on two machines and both be telling the truth about different units.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 0.5 GB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Unit Converter FAQ
How many megabytes are in a gigabyte?
1,000. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).
What is 8 GB in megabytes?
8,000 MB. Multiply by 1,000: 8 GB x 1,000 = 8,000 MB.
How do I convert megabytes back to gigabytes?
Divide by 1,000, or equivalently multiply by 0.001. One megabyte is 0.001 gigabytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Add three zeros. It is close enough for everyday use.
