Megabytes to gigabytes (MB to GB)
To convert megabytes to gigabytes (MB to GB): one megabyte is 0.001 gigabytes, so 1,000 MB is 1 GB.
In gigabytes
- Conversion factor Exact by definition: the decimal prefixes (kB, MB, GB, TB) step by exactly 1,000 and the binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) by exactly 1,024.
- 1 megabyte = 0.001 gigabytes
- The other way
- 1 gigabyte = 1,000 megabytes
- Working
- 1,000 x 0.001 = 1
- 1,000 MB in every unit
- 1.0000e9 B 1,000,000 kB 1,000 MB 1 GB 0.001 TB 0.000001 PB 976,563 KiB 953.67 MiB 0.93132 GiB 0.00090949 TiB 8.8818e-7 PiB
- Decimal vs binary prefixes Drive manufacturers use the decimal GB and operating systems traditionally reported the binary one, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB. Both numbers are correct; they are different units.
- 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824
| MB | GB |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0.001 |
| 2 | 0.002 |
| 5 | 0.005 |
| 10 | 0.01 |
| 25 | 0.025 |
| 50 | 0.05 |
| 100 | 0.1 |
How the Unit Converter works
One megabyte is exactly 0.001 gigabytes. That is the definition of the prefixes, not a measurement: the decimal SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) step by exactly 1,000, and the binary IEC prefixes (kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi) step by exactly 1,024. The two families are both exact; the trouble is only that software and storage labels do not always say which one they mean.
Worked through: 512 MB x 0.001 = 0.512 GB.
Going the other way, one gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes.
For mental arithmetic: Move the decimal point three places left.
A thousand, not 1,024. Which one is right depends on who is talking. The SI prefixes are decimal, so a megabyte is 10^6 bytes and a gigabyte 10^9, which is what drive manufacturers use and what this converter follows. Operating systems have historically used 1,024-based units while still calling them MB and GB, which is where the whole confusion comes from. The unambiguous binary units are the mebibyte and gibibyte, and they are on this converter too.
Precision is worth matching to the input. A measurement given as 100 MB carries one or two significant figures, and reporting its conversion to six implies a precision the original never had.
Unit Converter FAQ
How many gigabytes are in a megabyte?
0.001. That is exact by definition: the prefixes step by exactly 1,000 (SI) or 1,024 (IEC).
What is 1,000 MB in gigabytes?
1 GB. Multiply by 0.001: 512 MB x 0.001 = 0.512 GB.
How do I convert gigabytes back to megabytes?
Divide by 0.001, or equivalently multiply by 1,000. One gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes. The two factors are reciprocals, so you only need to remember one of them.
Is there a quick way to do this in my head?
Move the decimal point three places left. It is close enough for everyday use.
